Type: Luminaire

Proyect Year: 2019

Materials: Concrete & Wood

We often characterize materials by their texture or tactility: soft, rough, heavy, cold, etc. How do light sources produce similar sensations? For our luminaire design, we wanted to investigate how light informs materiality. We used concrete as a reflector and found the effect unique and exciting. The lamp sits beneath a wood fascia and reflects light upward onto a concrete arc, creating a focal glow on the material of interest. We initially intended to fasten our fixture to a wall for a sconce application but decided to avoid hanging such a heavy material. The result is more of a table-top lamp that illuminates in two directions: upward for visual interest, and downward for direct illumination.
